"WANT A LIVELY AND AFFECTIONATE DOG ? TRY DACHSHUNDS "

DACHSHUND means "Badger Dog". They are referred to as "Weiner dog" or "hot dogs".

Dachshunds are one of the most popular dogs and have been since the 1950's.

HISTORY

They originated in Germany and were bred specifically to hunt badgers. In the 1800's they were bred as pets especially in Great Britain. They are considered fearless hunters and taught to kill prey not retrieve it. Today they still retain their fearless quality.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

These dogs come in two sizes: miniature and standard.

Miniature: 5-7 inches high
8-10 pounds
Standard: 8-10 inches high
15-25 pounds

Life Span: 12-16 years

They are short-legged, muscular, elongated dogs with a narrow build. They have slight convex skull with short legs, intelligent expression and carriers themselves proudly.

These dogs have three types of coats: smooth, long-haired, wire-haired. The classic colors are: red(reddish-brown), black, tan. Breeding programs have created numerous others: chocolate, blue, blue and tan, cream Isabelle(fawn shade).

When talking about color they are referring to bare color of the coat but may have a coat color or pattern superimposed on their color. Their pattens are: Dapple-light or diluted markings on color or brindle with large areas of white over color.

CHARACATERISTICS AND TEMPERAMENT
  • Lively
  • Affectionate
  • Proud
  • Bold
  • Tenacious
  • Mischievous
  • Clever
  • Curious

Dachshunds are devoted to their family. They are best with older considerate children and are good for the eldery. They are moderately protective, like to bark which is deep sounding and are compulsive diggers.

The different coat types have special traits. The longhairs maintain their dignity while happily playing with anyone who will play with them and are calmer then the other two. The wirehairs are extroverts with a clownish sense of humor. The smoothies are inclined to attach themselves to a particular family member and are somewhat aloof with strangers.

Characteristics that have been maintained and that serve them as hunters are: independence, courageous, hardy and combativeness. Newer aspects they now have are: loving demeanor, charm, playfulness and sense of humor. They need very little exercise although are fairly active indoors. They do well in most climates. They are easy to travel with.

GROOMING

These dogs are a low-maintenance breed. The smooth coated needs little grooming but may need a sweater for cold winter days. The longhair needs brushing to prevent matting. The wirehair's coat require some brushing if soft. (They are average shedders). Their ears need attention because they can hold moisture which is a breeding ground for fungus, bacteria and mites.

Don't overfeed them because they put on weight quickly.

Dachshund generally live long and healthy lives but are subject to genetic disease:

  • Spinal disc problems
  • Can develop heart disease
  • Urinary tract problems
  • Diabetes

Dapple coat pattern dogs can have eye and hearing difficulties.

It's advisable to buy a dog from a reputable breeder to insure a quality dog.

Dachshund must be trained to obey family members and they need to be trained with a firm and consistent guidance, not harsh corrections.
